Sendai Attractions

1. Sendai Marine Forest Aquarium
Sendai Marine Forest Aquarium, located near Sendai Port, is dedicated to showcasing and protecting marine ecosystems. This modern aquarium is not only the largest in the Tohoku region but also a must-see attraction in Sendai. Here you can see a rich variety of marine life, including enormous whale sharks and colorful tropical fish.

Of particular interest is the massive "Sea of ​​Shining Life" tank, which stands 7.5 meters tall and 14 meters wide, showcasing approximately 30,000 fish and immersing visitors in a spectacular marine world. 2. Osaki Hachimangu Shrine
Osaki Hachiman Shrine, located in Sendai City, is the city's guardian shrine with a history of over 400 years. Built in 1607 by Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain, it enshrines Hachiman, the god of samurai and war. Its unique architectural style, employing the oldest existing Gongen-zukuri style in Japan, features a three-tiered structure consisting of the main hall, worship hall, and the "stone room" (a type of altar). All three are designated as National Treasures.

The shrine's interior, with its black-painted buildings adorned with gold leaf, exudes a magnificent and dignified aura. Every year on January 14th, Osaki Hachiman Shrine hosts the "Matsubaki Festival," a festival to bid farewell to the New Year and purify the mind and body, well worth attending. In addition, the shrine sells blue Daruma dolls called "Matsukawa Daruma," symbolizing the natural landscape of blue sky and sea, attracting many worshippers and tourists.

3. Yagiyama Zoo
Yagiyama Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the Tohoku region of Japan. It is located near Aobayama in Sendai City and is easily accessible. It only takes 12 minutes to get to Yagiyama Zoo Station from Sendai Station by subway.

This zoo houses over 115 species of animals, including many endangered and rare species such as polar bears, penguins, and camels. The zoo features several themed areas, such as the "African Garden," which recreates the ecosystem of the tropical savanna, where giraffes, elephants, and zebras roam freely. In the "Predator Enclosure," visitors can observe the majestic Sumatran tigers and polar bears up close through glass.

4. Sendai Castle
Sendai Castle, also known as Aoba Castle, was built in 1600 by Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain. Located on Mount Aoba, the castle was built into the mountainside, forming a natural fortress, surrounded by cliffs on the east and south sides. Although most of the buildings were destroyed in war, the stone walls and some of the towers remain well-preserved, showcasing the castle's former grandeur.

Today, the Sendai Castle Ruins are part of Aobayama Park, a popular spot for locals to relax and enjoy nature, and a great place for tourists to learn about Sendai's history. At the castle ruins, you can visit the Aoba Castle Museum and learn about the castle's architecture through 3D animation. Inside the castle is the castle tower, which features a bronze equestrian statue of Date Masamune, symbolizing the heroic spirit of this famous Sengoku period general – a perfect photo opportunity.

5. Zuihoden (Zuihoden Hall)
Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, a famous general of Japan's Sengoku period. Built in 1637, the year after his death, the mausoleum's architecture is highly characteristic of the Momoyama period, with its magnificent gold and colorful decorations leaving a lasting impression. Zuihoden was designated a National Treasure in 1943, but was unfortunately destroyed by fire during World War II and rebuilt in 1979.

The surrounding environment of Zuihoden is tranquil, with different scenery in each season. In spring, you can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms, while autumn is the best time to admire the autumn leaves. In addition, Zuihoden also houses the "Kansendo-den" for Date Tadamune, the second lord of Date Masamune, and the "Zen'ō-den" for Date Tsunamune, the third lord of Date Masamune. 6. Jozenji Street

9. Zuiganji Temple's Five Great Halls

10. Sendai Daikannon (Great Kannon Temple)
The Sendai Daikannon, officially named "Sendai Tendo White-Robed Daikannon," is one of the largest Kannon statues in Japan, standing within the grounds of the Daikan-Mitsuji Temple in northern Sendai. This magnificent statue, standing 100 meters tall, was completed in 1991 and symbolizes prayers for world peace and protection. Its height is chosen from the number 100 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sendai becoming a designated city and implementing municipal administration in 1989, and to pray for prosperity in the 21st century.

The Sendai Daikannon Temple has 12 floors and houses nearly 108 Buddha statues. You can take an elevator to the top floor for panoramic views of Sendai City and the distant Pacific Ocean. Inside the temple, you can admire many precious religious treasures, including the Thirty-Three Kannon statues, the Mishinden Hall, and the 108 Buddha statues. In addition, it enshrines the deity "Yukara Daikokuten," famous for its role in matchmaking, attracting many worshippers seeking good fortune in marriage.
